This Privacy Policy explains how the Real Food mobile app ("Real Food", "the app", "we", "us") handles your information. Real Food helps you understand how foods may affect your skin, appearance and wellbeing by scanning products with your camera and showing a score.
The short version: Real Food has no login and no user accounts. We don't sell your data. Photos you take are sent for analysis and are not stored on our servers afterwards. Most of your data stays on your device.
The app is operated by Balthasar Beyer, Germany. For any privacy question, contact us at balthasarbeyer@gmail.com.
| What | Why | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Photos of food/products you scan | To analyze the product and generate a score | Sent to our processing backend (Supabase Edge Function), which forwards the image to Google's Gemini AI for analysis. The image is processed in real time and is not stored by us after the score is returned. |
| Onboarding answers (e.g. goals, skin concerns, height, weight, age range) | To personalize your scores and plan | Stored on your device, and may be stored in our backend (Supabase) to power the app's features. |
| Scan history, habits, streaks, settings | To run app features (history, tracking, reminders) | Stored locally on your device. |
| Purchase & subscription status | To unlock Pro features and manage your subscription | Handled by RevenueCat and Apple. We receive your subscription status tied to an anonymous app user ID, not your name. |
| Usage & diagnostic analytics (e.g. screens viewed, taps, crashes) | To understand how the app is used and fix problems | Processed by PostHog using an anonymous identifier. |
Real Food asks for camera permission so you can scan products. The camera is only active on the scan screen. A captured photo is resized and sent for analysis to produce your score, then discarded by our backend. You can revoke camera access anytime in your iOS Settings.
We rely on the following providers, who process data only to deliver the app:
If you are in the EU/EEA, we process your data based on your consent (camera, analytics), the performance of our service to you (delivering scores, managing your subscription), and our legitimate interest in keeping the app working and secure. You can withdraw consent at any time by disabling the relevant permission or stopping use of the app.
Scanned photos are not retained after analysis. Data stored on your device remains until you delete it or uninstall the app — you can clear it anytime via the app's "Delete my data" option in Settings. Subscription records are kept by Apple and RevenueCat as required for billing.
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete your data, and to object to certain processing. Because the app is account-free, most of your data lives on your device and you control it directly. For anything held in our backend, email balthasarbeyer@gmail.com and we will respond.
Real Food is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 where required by local law). We do not knowingly collect data from children below that age.
Real Food is a wellness and educational tool, not a medical device. Scores and food information are estimates generated by AI and should not be treated as medical, nutritional, or dermatological advice. See our Terms of Use.
We may update this policy as the app evolves. The "Last updated" date above reflects the latest version.
